San Francisco 1906 earthquake, stunning photo

A stunning high resolution photo of the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake. Notice top-right a number of functional sail-ships, and bottom middle, a few horse-and-cart’s. And the lack of a Golden Gate bridge, as it hadn’t been built yet. An even more amazing thing - this photo was taken by flying the camera on a series of kites.

I find these little windows into another world fascinating. The destruction here is terrible, but it’s almost as though the whole scene is from some sort of mirror-world. It’s the contrast of such primitive technology and a huge city. For similar ‘ye olden photos’ be sure to visit Shorpy, the 100yr old photo blog.
